Looking to the Future: Social Media and School Counseling (Part II)

One of the biggest responsibilities of a school counselor is collaborating with school stakeholders. This can be students and faculty but also includes parents, families, and members of the community. Using Web 2.0 and social media can bridge the gap between what happens in the school building and fostering connections with families.

In my previous post, I mentioned starting a school counseling blog.  It's a great way to share resources, tips, and uplifting content with students and parents. You can post about study tips, emotional well-being, or fun activities to try at home. Plus, it’s a great way to keep the school community in the loop about upcoming events and counseling programs. I've also come to appreciate Blogger as a platform for its user-friendly and customizable options.

Instagram is another way I intend to connect with the school community. It's a great way to create a positive and lighthearted space with motivational quotes, quick tips on handling stress, or fun, interactive stories where students and families can interact. With the reels feature, it may even be fun to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of the activities or what goes into being an effective school counselor.

What other platforms do you think parents and community members could turn to in order to easily access what's going on in the school building? Instagram is always my first thought, but is there a better social media outlet?
