Social Media in Our Backyard... Or is it?

Have you ever scrolled through videos and posts on social media and just assume everyone is from the same place or country as you?

I think this is pretty normal. The algorithms behind these platforms are designed to show us stuff we’re interested in, which means we end up seeing posts that match our own cultural vibes. So, it’s not surprising that we might start thinking the people we interact with are from the same area as us. I often see a lot of surprising comments when people who interact with a post learn their favorite influencer lives across the world from them.

One of the biggest reasons we assume people are from our region is language. For example, if you’re scrolling through posts in English with lots of American slang, it’s easy to assume the person behind the post is from the US.

What's really cool about social media is that it connects people from all over the world. By staying curious and open-minded, we can make the most of our digital connections and appreciate the diverse world out there. So next time you’re scrolling, remember: the person behind that post could be from anywhere—and that’s pretty cool!

  1. I enjoyed reading this post! Yes, content can come from anywhere around the world, but algorithms play a significant role in determining what we see. When I was in Korea for the last three months, most of the posts I saw were about Korea and in Korean. Now that I'm back in the US, I'm seeing more posts in English. It's fascinating (and a bit scary) how these algorithms work!
