The Mitchells vs. the Machines

For their summer program, my local library offers a morning movie every Tuesday. It was a scorcher, so The Sirs and I went to check it out.

Turns out they were playing The Mitchells vs. the Machines: a very quirky movie about a very quirky family who battled a robot apocalypse.

The movie uses satire to highlight how Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 (and 4.0?) shapes modern society. The teenage daughter provides as a prime example of how Web 2.0 can shape identity. Her passion for vlogging and digital content creation highlights the way social media and other platforms offer a space to showcase creativity and personal identity while connecting with others with similar views and interests.

On the complete opposite end, the father has no idea how to use a computer and is often frustrated with his family's obsession with their screens. The major differences between these two characters places a divide within the family dynamics and are challenged when the AI robots take over the world (lol).

Ultimately the characters learn to understand one another and find a balance between being chronically online or offline. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and it was a good reminder of the importance of balancing our digital and personal lives. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it - kids or no kids!
